You do this with the relaxation exercises you learned in Chapter 3, âRelaxation Training.â Relaxation exercises are all about reducing sympathetic nervous system arousal. Since stress leads to arousal, and arousal increases GI distress, reducing arousal using relaxation techniques should help reduce the impact of stress on your GI symptoms.
But remember, an even better way to reduce the impact of stress is to reduce the stress itself! The best way to do this is to target the negative thoughts that are making you feel stressed to begin with. That means you can intervene much earlier in the cycle:
